This "Effective Negotiating Skills" programme starts with an analysis of the learning process to help people understand how they learn and how other people learn. This influences negotiating style. The course continues with an in-depth review of negotiating and communication skills; an analysis of tactics, and consideration of how the stresses of negotiation can affect our performance.

The approach adopted gives participants a clear understanding of how the negotiation process works. It develops and enhances individual and team negotiating competence and confidence. They will be able to identify changes required to improve the overall negotiating effectiveness of both the organisation and themselves.

The 8 sessions are intended to be completed in a 2-day Workshop. The exercises and questionnaires in each session provide the opportunity to check on progress. For example, the major role play in Session 4 involves practice in the negotiating process. The most important part of this role play is afterwards: in the discussion and critique of what happened. In subsequent sessions the Trainer can refer back to a live instance from the role play, an extremely useful tool. The material is flexible, and Trainers can arrange the sessions in any order which they feel is appropriate. Generally speaking, participants will respond favourably to the interaction that each session provides. The sessions are all interrelated, so that participants can relate back to points which have been made earlier on. The material is easily customised by using examples of negotiations or exercises that are relevant to the industry or organisation.
